A Little bit of context

In 2021, we left Paris for Sicily with our young children, aspiring to cultivate an old garden. Full of olive trees. Full of fruit trees. And, above all, vines to make wine. Nestled at an altitude of 1,000 metres on the north face of Mount Etna, the garden is a testament to the area's working history, breathtaking biodiversity and exceptional viticultural qualities. On ancient terraces, the emblematic Nerello Mascalese grows alongside old Grenache, incredible Grecanico dorato and elegant Cataratto. Since our arrival, we have acquired a further 2.5 hectares using the same agro-forestry model. In good and bad years alike, we produce 3,500 bottles of free, lively and vibrant wine.

Vintage 23

Our 2023 harvest was torpedoed by mildew that burned 80% of our crop (grapes, but also walnuts, apples, apricots, etc.) and by fire that roasted some of our old vines. All of this was due to a hot, humid, tropical spring (ideal for mildew) followed by a very hot, very dry summer (ideal for fire). In other words, the blow to morale was severe, and the harvest was meager. All in all: 11 boxes of grapes, a few demijohns and basta, see you next year! Stricken but not defeated, we scoured Etna and the surrounding area in search of something to fill our empty bottles, and here and there we found a few dozen more crates. It wasn't until we made our way to Calabria, home of our friend Carmelo Cambareri (Racina Wines), that we were able to pick a few rows in an organic vineyard

populated by varieties we'd never vinified before. Greco Nero, Mantonico, Cabernet franc and Cabernet sauvignon in soils far from the basalt we know. So, hoping very much not to make a mistake, we harvested and macerated these grapes, assisted - and this is perhaps the most beautiful thing about this vintage - by exceptional friends and pickers. 2023 is a bracket in our work, with different grape varieties, wines, volumes and prices. This year has taught us many things, about ourselves, about our tenacity, but above all about the profession of winemaker, far away from the romanticism.

ENIGMA RESISTENZA

In our search for grapes, we wandered across from Etna to the Peloritani mountains, which extend the Nebrodi all the way to Taormina. Here you'll find the most spectacular views of Etna, as well as clay soils with layers of limestone, granite, sandstone and gneiss. This is where we found a small vineyard owned by a sturdy old lady bent like a wire. Here the sun shines and the white grapes (Cattarato, Zibibbo...) ripen a month before ours. So, at the end of August, we harvested the few grapes from his vineyard, then we destemmed them by hand directly into a demijohn and left them to macerate for a month. At the end of this period, we crushed them before putting the juice back into the demijohn for a year. The resulting orange wine is tannic, smooth and velvety, with floral, exotic and ripe fruit aromas such as apricot. No additives were used.

Enigma Resistenza means that the enigma is perhaps the most accessible form of resistance to the modern world. Today's social networks push for exhibition, and it has become suspicious not to say or show everything. But keeping our secrets is what makes us who we are. The same goes for our wines and the way they are made, some of which remain mysterious... making them impossible to reproduce identically.
